Our Breast Imaging radiologists at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer are dedicated to the comprehensive practice of breast radiology. Their expertise encompasses a wide range of services, including:
- Digital Mammography Interpretation: This includes both screening and diagnostic evaluations to detect and diagnose breast cancer.
- Digital Mammography Intervention: Procedures such as needle localization and stereotactic biopsy are performed to precisely target areas of concern identified during mammography.
- Breast Ultrasound Interpretation: Ultrasound is used for both screening and diagnostic purposes, providing detailed images of breast tissue.
- Breast Ultrasound Intervention: Techniques such as needle localization, biopsy, and fine needle aspiration are employed to obtain tissue samples for further analysis.
- Breast MRI Interpretation: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is utilized to assess breast tissue, particularly in cases where mammography and ultrasound results are inconclusive.
- Breast MRI Intervention: MRI-guided needle biopsy and needle localization are performed to accurately sample and target areas of interest.
- Clinical Practice: Radiologists engage in direct patient care, ensuring that each individual receives personalized and comprehensive diagnostic services.
The Julie and Ben Rogers Breast Diagnostic Clinic, situated in the Texas Medical Center, has earned the prestigious designation of Center of Excellence in Breast Imaging by the American College of Radiology (ACR), an accrediting body of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Achieving this designation requires full accreditation by the ACR in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound, reflecting the clinic's commitment to high standards of care.
Annually, the department performs nearly 83,000 procedures, demonstrating its extensive experience and capability in breast imaging. Adjunct nuclear medicine services are available through the Nuclear Medicine department, providing additional diagnostic options.
The clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology, including:
- Digital Mammography Machines: 12 machines are available for breast cancer screening and diagnostic evaluation, ensuring high-quality imaging.
- Stereotactic Biopsy Units: Two units (one prone and one upright) are used for digital mammography interventions, allowing precise targeting of suspicious areas.
- High-Resolution Ultrasound Units: 10 units with power Doppler capabilities provide detailed imaging and assessment of breast tissue.
- Breast MRI Units: Two 3T MRI units and one 1.5T MRI unit are utilized for biopsies, offering advanced imaging and intervention capabilities.
- Molecular Breast Imaging Unit: This unit provides specialized imaging to detect and evaluate breast cancer.
- Mobile Units: Four mobile units travel to various locations, offering state-of-the-art digital mammography screening to patients in different areas.
Education and Training
The Breast Imaging Fellowship at MD Anderson is a highly sought-after program, attracting over 45 applicants each year. This 12-month fellowship offers extensive experience in multimodality breast imaging and intervention, providing fellows with ample opportunities for multidisciplinary interactions with a dedicated team of breast physicians. The program emphasizes hands-on training and collaboration, preparing fellows for successful careers in breast imaging.
Additionally, the clinic actively participates in The University of Texas at Houston Diagnostic Radiology training program, offering fellows, residents, and medical students educational opportunities. This involvement ensures that trainees receive comprehensive education and experience in breast imaging, fostering the next generation of radiologists.
